‘Greenery’ is the Pantone Colour of the Year 2017

Here at The Printed Bag Shop we love to keep an eye on the latest trends that will affect design, packaging and all things branding, and one of those that we like to follow every year is the Pantone colour of the year!

The Pantone colour institute was founded all the way back in 1962, and has been helping designers of fashion and interiors alike to keep in touch with the defining colours of the time, as well as colour consulting with brands specifically to enable them to make the most informed decisions about the colours for their brands and products.

We’ve reported on the Pantone colour of the year announcement for the past 2 years now, with Serenity and Rose Quartz taking the crown jointly for 2016, and the deep red of Marsala being selected for 2015.

The ‘colour of the year’ itself is supposed to be a symbolic colour selection, which provides a snapshot of what Pantone sees taking place in culture globally, and which expresses a collective mood and attitude.

And, the colour of the year for 2017? The fantastic, fresh-feeling Greenery.

We blogged about Pantone’s colour report for 2017 this month, and in that we talked about how the palette for the coming months seems to be heavily influenced by the outdoors and natural hues, and that has been reflected in the colour choice for 2017. Greenery is reminiscent of leafy palms and freshly cut grass, with a yellow undertone to it’s green. Chosen to evoke the first days of spring and nature’s ability to revive, restore and renew, this natural neutral of Greenery signals the need for us to all to step outside, take a breath, inhale more oxygen and reinvigorate ourselves.

As modern life continues to grow and adapt into something even more digital, even more work-focused and chained to our laptop, Pantone sensed consumers’ craving to get back to the natural world and so selected Greenery to reflect this.

It’s likely this choice with impact a large number of industries and designs to come in 2017, with it likely to encourage the inclusion of nature and greenery into our daily lives – from architecture, to urban planning, to how we design our homes.

Greenery is an extremely versatile and trans-seasonal shade which works well in many different colour combinations – from floral brights to subtle pastels, more earthy tones or nature-inspired neutrals.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment.

“Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolises the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”
